Project Background
In steel production, industrial water is widely used for equipment cooling, circulating water systems, and various auxiliary production processes. As an important process parameter, stable and accurate water flow measurement plays a key role in monitoring pipeline operating conditions, optimizing water consumption, and supporting the continuous operation of production systems.
A steel company in Central China has installed multiple industrial water pipelines throughout its production facility. The site features a relatively dense arrangement of pipelines and valves, requiring continuous water flow measurement across pipelines of different sizes. This project involves DN50, DN65, and DN80 pipelines, with electromagnetic flow meters selected for industrial water flow measurement.
Steel Plant Water Flow Measurement Requirements
Steel production sites typically feature a large number of pipelines, concentrated equipment, and long operating cycles. Industrial water systems also contain pipelines with different nominal diameters and operating conditions. For this project, different pipeline sizes correspond to different actual flow conditions. Therefore, the water flow measurement instruments need to meet basic measurement requirements while also matching the pipeline size, flow range, and installation conditions.
The project covers DN50, DN65, and DN80 pipelines, all of which require continuous flow monitoring. Since the flow rates vary between different pipelines, electromagnetic flow meter selection needs to take into account the normal flow rate, maximum flow rate, minimum flow rate, medium temperature, operating pressure, and other process parameters. The meter size should therefore be selected based on the actual operating conditions rather than solely on the nominal pipeline diameter.

Electromagnetic Flow Meter Application
To meet the industrial water flow measurement requirements, electromagnetic flow meters were selected as the primary flow measurement instruments for this project. Based on Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction, an electromagnetic flow meter measures the induced voltage generated when a conductive liquid flows through a magnetic field, allowing the volumetric flow rate of the liquid inside the pipeline to be determined.
Industrial water, circulating water, and cooling water generally have sufficient electrical conductivity for electromagnetic flow measurement. As a result, electromagnetic flow meters are well suited to these types of industrial water flow measurement applications.
Based on the different pipeline sizes and actual operating conditions, appropriately sized electromagnetic flow meters were installed to continuously measure the industrial water flow in the DN50, DN65, and DN80 pipelines. By matching each flow meter to the specific pipeline and operating conditions, the measurement range can be better suited to the actual process flow, supporting continuous water flow monitoring across different branches of the steel production system.
Installation in a Complex Pipeline Environment
As shown in the application site, the industrial water system in the steel plant contains a dense arrangement of pipelines, valves, flanges, and instruments, with limited installation space in some areas. Therefore, the installation position of each electromagnetic flow meter needs to be determined according to the pipeline layout and equipment arrangement. Sufficient space should also be considered for subsequent commissioning, parameter configuration, inspection, and maintenance.
During electromagnetic flow meter installation, the measuring pipe should be maintained in a full-pipe condition whenever possible. Installation locations where the pipeline may not remain full, where excessive air bubbles may accumulate, or where the flow profile is unstable should be avoided. For industrial pipelines containing multiple valves and fittings, the relative positions of valves and flow meters should also be considered to minimize the influence of changes in flow conditions on measurement stability.
In addition, electromagnetic flow meters are electrical measuring instruments, so proper grounding and signal cable installation should be carried out according to the instrument's technical requirements. In a steel plant with a high density of equipment, proper wiring and installation can help improve signal stability and provide a reliable foundation for subsequent data acquisition and automated control.

Continuous Water Flow Monitoring for Multiple Pipeline Sizes
This project covers multiple industrial pipeline sizes, including DN50, DN65, and DN80. By installing appropriately sized electromagnetic flow meters, continuous flow measurement can be achieved across different industrial water pipelines.
Compared with a single-pipeline application, a project involving multiple pipeline sizes places greater emphasis on instrument selection and installation. Each flow meter needs to be matched to the actual flow rate and process conditions of its corresponding pipeline.
The electromagnetic flow meters continuously provide water flow data, enabling operators to monitor the operating conditions of the industrial water pipelines in real time. Depending on the requirements of the plant's control system, the flow signals can also be transmitted to an upper-level monitoring or control system, supporting process data acquisition and automated management in steel production.
Application Value
For steel plants, the stable operation of industrial water systems is closely related to equipment cooling, process operation, and water management. Installing electromagnetic flow meters on industrial water pipelines of different sizes enables continuous monitoring of water flow and provides operators with more direct information about pipeline operating conditions.
In this project, electromagnetic flow meters were applied to DN50, DN65, and DN80 industrial water pipelines, enabling continuous flow monitoring across multiple pipeline sizes while meeting the requirements of the site installation conditions. The solution can also serve as a reference for industrial water, circulating water, and cooling water flow measurement applications in steel, metallurgy, energy, and other process industries.
Stable Measurement for Reliable Water Flow Data
For continuously operating industrial water pipelines in steel production facilities, electromagnetic flow meters provide continuous flow measurement and stable signal output, allowing pipeline operating conditions to be monitored in real time. For different pipeline sizes, including DN50, DN65, and DN80, the flow meters can be selected according to the actual flow range and process conditions.
With proper installation, full-pipe operation, and correct grounding, potential influences from air bubbles, flow disturbances, and electromagnetic interference can be reduced, helping provide stable and continuous flow data for industrial water, circulating water, and cooling water systems. This supports reliable flow monitoring and automated process management in steel production.
Conclusion
As the steel industry continues to advance toward greater automation and digitalization, water flow measurement has become an important part of production process monitoring and industrial water system management. For different pipeline sizes, flow ranges, and complex industrial environments, selecting an appropriate flow measurement instrument and implementing proper installation are essential for stable long-term operation.
In this project, a steel company in Central China used electromagnetic flow meters to measure water flow in DN50, DN65, and DN80 industrial water pipelines, achieving continuous flow monitoring across multiple pipeline sizes. For similar steel plant industrial water flow measurement applications, electromagnetic flow meters can be selected according to the specific medium, pipeline diameter, flow rate, pressure, temperature, and installation conditions, providing reliable measurement support for industrial water systems and production process management.
